About the book
In the book Law and Finance in International Art Markets: Tools for the Future (eds. Elisabetta Lazzaro, Nathalie Moureau and Adriana Turpin, London: Routledge, 2026), we explore two key factors that contribute to the social construction of the art market: the legal frameworks that underpin it and its financing structures. In keeping with the aims of the previous volume, Researching Arts Markets: Past, Present and Tools for the Future (eds. Elisabetta Lazzaro, Nathalie Moureau and Adriana Turpin, London: Routledge, 2021), the essays in this collection highlight the connections between historical and contemporary practices through a multidisciplinary perspective. They aim to show how many of the legal and financial structures shaping today’s art market reflect historical precedents.
The book, an initiative of Researching Art Markets Past & Present: Tools for the Future (RAM-T), brings together scholars from a wide range of disciplines to examine the legal and financial structures of art markets, both past and present, across the globe. The chapters draw on perspectives from the humanities and social sciences, employing diverse methods to analyse the creation, demand, dissemination, evaluation, and protection of art in an increasingly globalised environment.
Overall, this volume offers a valuable resource for understanding art markets within their broader context. It will be of interest to scholars researching the legal and financial dimensions of the cultural and creative industries in general, and of international art markets in particular, as well as to art market professionals.
